MCFD New Directions

You may have heard…MCFD are restructuring their funding over the next three years.  You can find more information here:

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/health/managing-your-health/child-behaviour-development/support-needs/what-to-expect

In preparation, we are working with our provincial Speech and Hearing BC committees, as well as our many community partners to learn what this will mean for our clients.  To date, our profession’s concerns regarding continuity of care for existing clients, recruitment of the necessary professionals, scope of practice of the service providers, and service delivery challenges of the new Family Hubs have not been responded to by MCFD.  We continue to advocate for clear answers to these concerns and a clear plan moving forward.

There is a shortage of Registered Speech Language Pathologists in BC.  Reducing the number of service sites to 40 employer agencies, providing services to every child and youth presenting with support needs in the given geographic region, while eliminating waitlists, and increasingly prohibitive restrictions on acquiring registration through our  BC College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals, presents logistical challenges that are concerning.

Our commitment to providing our clients with excellent quality care has not changed.  We will continue to learn, advocate, and investigate through the next year, and plan a way forward with you and your family.  We will share more information as we get it!
